The children engaged in a rich exchange of ideas, sharing their own knowledge while learning from their listeners.
The children of Hucknall Flying High Academy pay monthly visits to their friends and neighbours at Harrier House Care Home to share a variety of activities with residents, and this month, the topic was World War II.
During the visit, the children demonstrated their learning about World War II and Hucknall’s part in it, they shared cakes they made in their design and technology classes and sang familiar wartime songs with those gathered.
Residents also shared their own experiences and memories, bringing children’s learning to life.

One of many highlights for children was meeting resident Mr. Joseph Ginger, who fascinated them with stories from his youth, including memories of watching planes land near his childhood home. Mr Ginger has sadly passed away since the visit, but he will be fondly remembered by staff at Harrier House who described him as ‘their beloved friend’, and by children and teachers for the generosity with which he shared his own experiences.
Pupil Charlotte is in Year 6 at Hucknall Flying High Academy and said, “I really enjoyed going to the care home to share what we’ve been learning about why Hucknall was important in World War II.
“The residents at Harrier House told us lots of interesting things they knew, and we all had a lovely sing song together. We even shared the cakes we had made, which everyone seemed to enjoy. It was a really special visit and I’m glad we got to go.’
