Porchester Junior School in Carlton is celebrating the news that they have met the Strong Standard grade across the board in their latest Ofsted inspection. Ofsted says the Strong rating demonstrates that 鈥楾he school reaches a strong standard. Leaders are working above the standard expected of them鈥�. This is the school鈥檚 first inspection under Ofsted鈥檚 new framework.

School leaders were praised for being, 鈥樷�� relentless in removing barriers to learning and ensuring that all pupils can succeed.鈥�

All pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities, can access the same curriculum as their peers, said inspectors, and are supported by a robust pastoral system that ensures all needs are monitored and responded to 鈥榗onsistently well鈥�

Vicki Welsby is Headteacher at Porchester Junior School and said, 鈥淲e are incredibly proud that Ofsted has recognised Porchester as Strong across all areas under the new framework. This report truly reflects what makes our school so special and what it feels like to be a pupil here every single day.

Attendance is a high priority at the school, carefully managed by school leaders. Inspectors said, 鈥楾he school is an oasis of calm because expectations of pupils鈥� conduct are taught clearly, reinforced and understood by all. In lessons, pupils are settled, focused and eager to learn,鈥� and that, 鈥楶upils show impeccable manners, positive attitudes and confidence. This creates a safe, inclusive environment where everyone feels respected.鈥�

Curriculum and teaching are inclusive and led confidently at the school, ensuring that all pupils build strong foundations and achieve well. Teachers are described as confident in their subject knowledge and are able to adapt quickly to provide extra help when pupils require it. Inspectors said that school leaders regularly review teaching and learning 鈥榯o ensure that their high ambitions are lived out consistently鈥�.

Inspectors said that the school works closely with families and effectively uses external professionals to support children, saying, 鈥楢s a result, pupils feel included, safe and able to thrive, both academically and emotionally.鈥�

Staff wellbeing and workload is prioritised at the school and opportunities for professional learning are found to be an integral aspect of the school鈥檚 culture. Leadership and governance

were also praised for demonstrating a clear and accurate understanding of the school鈥檚 strengths and priorities, with a focus on what matters most for pupils. Inspectors said, 鈥楾here is a sense of teamwork which leads to children thriving.鈥�

Parents and carers told inspectors that leaders are 鈥榓pproachable and communicative鈥�, citing purposeful engagement, 鈥樷��especially when additional support is needed.鈥�

The personal development and wellbeing offer at Porchester Junior School ensures children learn about relationships, health, personal responsibility and safety, including online, helping children to 鈥樷��stay safe in the world around them, strengthen their character and grow in cultural awareness.鈥�

Pupils told inspectors they 鈥榝eel happy, safe and supported鈥� and know how to seek help in different ways.

Children are offered leadership roles and wider experiences to build their confidence and resilience and to 鈥榙evelop a strong sense of belonging.鈥� Inspectors said, 鈥楤y the time they reach Year 6, pupils feel well prepared for the next stage of education.鈥�

When reporting on what it is like to be a pupil at the school, inspectors said, 鈥楶upils enjoy coming to school and are greeted warmly by staff who know them well. Calm, well-established routines help pupils feel secure and valued. Pupils settle quickly, while those who need additional reassurance are supported thoughtfully so that they are ready to engage.

鈥楶upils speak confidently about 鈥楶orchester Pride鈥�. They describe this as treating others with respect, showing kindness, and taking pride in their learning and their school. They speak about the school with genuine pride and describe Porchester as 鈥榦ne big family鈥�. Parents and carers are positive about the school鈥檚 work. They also feel very much part of the Porchester community.鈥�

Reading is prioritised at the school, and pupils said this approach builds confidence and prepares them well for secondary school. Inspectors said, 鈥楩rom their starting points, all pupils make significant progress towards their next steps in learning鈥� and that children, 鈥榙emonstrate genuine empathy and treat others fairly and with respect. Pupils understand equality and equity, which are taught well through the curriculum. They appreciate that fairness means providing different support so that everyone can succeed.鈥�

Finally, inspectors said, 鈥楢t Porchester, everyone belongs. Relationships are affirming and trusting. Classrooms are calm and respectful, and pupils are confident that staff will listen and act if concerns arise.鈥�
